Serial Testing is important for Kids with ICDs

ICD- Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator is a small device placed in the chest or abdomen that is useful in preventing sudden death in patients with known, sustained ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation. It uses electrical pulses or shocks that helps in controlling life-threatening #arrhythmias, especially those that can cause sudden cardiac arrest.
In growing #children, ICD should be tested regularly to ensure that they continue to work properly. Newer generation ICDs may have a dual function that includes the ability to serve as a pacemaker which would stimulate the heart to beat if the heart rate is detected to be too slow. ICD is recommended if the child is at risk of a life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia. Causes of arrhythmia include Acute Myocardial Infarction, Myocardial Ischemia, Electrolyte Imbalance and drug toxicity.
